The same company that is working on bringing the Tasmanian tiger back from extinction, has announced they are working on bringing back another extinct species. Colossal Biosciences announced Wednesday, September 17, they are a step closer in reviving the Dodo bird. They’ll use genetic engineering to try and create a living, breathing version or ‘copy’ of the bird.
The last dodo bird was seen in 1662. The flightless bird disappeared because of a combination of factors including hunting by sailors and the introduction of invasive species like pigs and rats, which predated on their eggs and destroyed their habitat.
The last Tasmanian tiger died in a New York Zoo in 1936. Colossal Biosciences has raised over $20 million for a de-extinction project that looks a lot like Jurassic Park. They also are working on bringing back the wooly mammoth. What’s next? A t-rex? I mean, what could go wrong?
