Republican State Representative Carrie Barth of Baldwin City, is resigning from the Kansas House. She and her husband are moving out of the district and will tackle new life challenges. Barth says, in a letter to the Kansas Secretary of State, that it was a very tough decision because she love serving the people. She goes on to say that she and her husband are empty nesters and with new life challenges, it’s a bittersweet moment. She says it’s an honor that is hard to describe in words what it means to her to serve the people who voted her into office. Barth submitted her resignation Tuesday, September 23rd, meaning that precinct leaders have 21 days to hold a meeting to choose a successor to fill the remainder of her term in the House. Courtney Sappington of Baldwin City will run for the seat at the upcoming precinct election. Also mentioned for the seat is Jacklyn Pasquale Paletta, a Paola attorney.

Barth is the fourth house candidate to have resigned since the last legislative session ended. Her district includes covers parts of Johnson, Miami, Douglas and Franklin Counties. She was elected in 2022 after she defeated Republican incumbent Representative Mark Samsel in the GOP primary. She won her general election in 2024 with 68% of the vote.
