City council meetings have been full of concerned citizens lately as people are rallying against high property taxes and how that money is spent. Osawatomie is no exception. Last week at the Revenue Neutral Hearing, residents raised their concerns.

Oliver Tanner says he is a disabled veteran who would like to start a small business in the city, but he is discouraged by the city’s increasing taxes and desire to attract larger businesses to town that would compete with him. Polly Inscore criticized city officials for continuing to spend money and increase taxes. Inscore also criticized excessive spending on things she believes to be wasteful. She challenged them to take a good look at this budget and start shaving things off. Several others made note of property taxes that have tripled over the past several years.

Osawatomie City Council members approved the city’s budget and agreed to exceed the revenue neutral rate.
