The City of Ottawa has sent out a flyer outlining what the one cent sales tax, that has been in effect since 2005, has helped pay for. Things like offsetting property tax increases, assisting with the development of a second industrial park and helping fund community services such as police and fire, improving streets , parks, cemeteries, playgrounds and more. Ottawa Mayor Emily Allen:
The city newsletter emphasizes that the sales tax is not a new tax and if it passes, people would continue to pay the same sales tax rate as we pay now, and those funds would hold down property taxes by nearly 14 mills.
