Campaigns for and against a proposed amendment to the Kansas Constitution allowing direct election of justices to the Kansas Supreme Court have begun the one-year charge to the August 2026 primary election where the issue will be decided. Attorney General Chris Kobach says polls show Kansans overwhelmingly prefer voting on supreme court justices. Right now, a panel of names are given to the governor and she selects a justice from that panel.

Twenty second District Representative, Lindsay Vaughn says it isn’t about giving voters a choice. It’s about politicizing our judicial system for their own personal gain and taking away the constitutional rights we have fought so hard to protect. Also, the amendment would open our judicial process to outside special interest groups—allowing billionaires, like Elon Musk, to spend millions of dollars trying to elect extreme judicial candidates. The question is on the general election ballot in November of 2026.
