Governor Kelly announced her “People’s Budget Tour” on Monday, October 6th, with Adam Proffitt, Director of the Budget and secretary of the Kansas Department of Administration, to do what she called ‘repair the damage of the legislature’s reckless budget’.
That elicited a response from the Republican party. Republican House Speaker Dan Hawkins says the legislature is focused on rooting out waste and abuse in government spending and…”after seven years in office, Governor Kelly has announced she and Secretary Profitt are living out their inner Sonny and Cher and launching a statewide duet tour”. Saying he hopes, in addition to their vocal stylings, they offer real budget solutions. He goes on to say that for years, Kelly has offered criticism and mixed messages while offering no concrete plans to reduce spending in executive branch agencies. He added that the legislature took the bull by the horns, implementing a new budget process that cut spending by $233 million this year, a reduction of over $30 million from the governor’s own proposal.
