All kinds of accidents are caused by animals entering the roadway and drivers either hitting them, or swerving to avoid hitting them. This was the case in Douglas County yesterday, October 2nd, as a flock of turkeys has been blamed for a crash that seriously injured a motorcycle driver near Lone Star Lake. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says first responders were called to the area of East 662 Diagonal Road and East 715 Road with reports of the crash. Once on scene, they found a 29-year-old driver who was airlifted to a Kansas City area hospital with serious injuries.

Investigators indicated that the driver attempted to avoid a group of turkeys that entered the roadway. However, when he swerved to miss them, he crashed instead. The man was wearing full protective gear and a helmet, which the sheriff’s office says likely kept his injuries from being much worse. Law enforcement wants drivers to be aware of turkeys, deer and other wildlife in the roadways during this time of the year, particularly deer as October is the start of the deer rut and they are very active.
