With this being burning season, a lot of people want to get out and burn off the fields and pastures but, the wind in Kansas doesn’t always cooperate. So, when is it safe to burn? Well, first, you have to get a permit from Anderson County. Anyone wishing to do agricultural burning such as brush piles and field maintenance must contact the Anderson County Communications Center before setting the fire. They’ll take down basic information such as what is being burned, where the burning will take place, and contact information for the land owner or person conducting the burn.

If burning is allowed, they will issue a “permit” to burn at that location. You just can’t light it and leave. There are some rules. Someone needs to supervise the fire, day or night until the fire is extinguished. Only brush grass and leaves can be burned. No tires, lumber, or fuels are allowed to be burned. Also, you need to light the fire a half hour after sunrise, and the smoke can’t blow across roadways obstructing motorists view. Any questions, call Anderson County Fire Coordinator, Cruz Gillespie and he can help.
