The Franklin County Commission will meet this morning. One major item on the agenda, the commission will consider revoking the special use permit for the Great Plains Precision Rifle Range on K-68 Highway west of Ottawa. The range sits about a mile and a half south of a new bridge on the Flint Hills Trail that crosses over the railroad tracks. Bike riders and trail users have worried about stray bullets coming toward the trail. Some citizens have expressed concerns and have reported damage to their buildings from bullets and also experiencing bullets whizzing by as they stand in their yards. The owner of the range, Tim Yoder, has agreed to modify the layout of the range to accommodate concerns. The Planning Commission has recommended that the commissioners approve a modified special use permit, which increases the size of the berms on the long distance firing line.
The commission will also recognize October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The meeting will be held at 8:30 this morning and be live streamed on the Franklin County Kansas youtube channel.
