The family of 12 year old Trey Folsom, who was hit by a car at 15th and Ash during cross-country practice, are looking for answers. In October he was hit in a crosswalk at the intersection. The 77-year-old driver, traveling at an unknown speed, just after school zone lights were deactivated. Trey’s father, Mark Folsom, told Fox 4 that his son had gone nearly all the way across the street when he was hit:
The driver was not cited in the crash. Trey was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital for treatment for a concussion, and a cut on his head that required eight stiches. A police report from the Ottawa Police Department cites a traffic code saying “no pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb and walk or run into path of a vehicle which is so close as to constitute an immediate hazard”.
The Ottawa Police Department have forwarded the case to the Franklin County Attorney’s Office to see if anyone, including the boy, should be cited.
The family has also launched a change.org community petition asking for changes at the intersection to make it safer.
