Do you ever think about pork? Pork chops, bacon, sausage, ham? If you are like me, the thought of bacon makes you salivate. There are about one thousand hog farms in Kansas, with 150 of those producing 99% of the states’ pigs. With over three million market hogs, feeder pigs and seed stock every year those provide 600 million pounds of pork at a value of over 660 million dollars, which helps feed millions of people in the United States and abroad.

Hog farms also help the Kansas grain producers, as the hogs consume over 36 million bushels of grain every year, mainly Kansas grown grain sorghum and corn, along with 8 million bushels of soybeans. Other jobs are supported through feed dealers, construction, supplies from main street businesses, utilities, trucking and other services like accounting, medical, engineering, veterinary services, and more.

October has been National Pork Month, so celebrate all things pork, and i hope you had a happy pork-tober.
