With mother nature blasting us with the coldest air we’ve seen so far this season tomorrow night… staying warm is on everyone’s mind. Cold like this keeps firefighters awake at night, knowing that cold weather is prime time for house fires. Those fires caused by people just trying to stay warm. Former Ottawa Fire Chief, now with LOH Fire, Tim Mathias, says one of the biggest problems is space heaters:
He adds that new space heaters are equipped with a safety measure so that when they tip over, they shut off. Fire officials suggest not using your oven as a source of heat and not to leave any open flames, like candles burning at night. A reminder that the Ottawa Fire Department also has smoke detectors available to residents, free of charge to anyone wanting them or needing them.
