If it flies, it dies. That’s the motto that many Kansans will be using this month, as duck season has officially started in our area. Hunters will be waking up dark and early to set up decoys for a chance to bag some birds once the sun rises. Whether you’re hunting in a party or solo on private land, it’s important to practice hunter safety, so as not to hurt others, or yourself. Ducks Unlimited has a list of tips to make sure your hunt goes smoothly.

First, understand shooting lanes. Follow the 10 o’clock-to-2 o’clock window rule to insure you don’t accidentally shoot too closely to other hunters in your party, potentially shooting the barrel of their gun, causing damage, and potential injury. Also, check your barrel. Trudging through water, mud, and grass could clog your barrel, causing a backfire. Be sure to check your barrel for debris before loading or firing. Also, keep your safety on until ready to fire. This will avoid misfires in the blind which could scare away the birds or even worse, hurt someone. Also, know your target and what lies beyond it. When hunting public land or otherwise, you should always be aware of other hunters or creatures that could potentially be in your line of fire.
