Kansas Attorney General Chris Kobach has written a blistering letter to major a-AI developers and put the industry on notice. They need to implement a significant course correction or be held accountable. He says Kansas is prepared to enforce civil and criminal liabilities against companies that prioritize profits and speed over safeguards for children, parents and consumers. Kobach highlights a recent case in Topeka where a sexual predator used AI to generate thousands of images depicting child sexual abuse. The letter also cites multiple national reports where AI encouraged teen suicide, validated self-harm as feeling good, and promoted sexualized interactions with minors.

The attorney general’s letter demands the aiAI companies respond by january 30th, and demonstrate how they can ensure user safety, prevent illicit conduct, and comply with Kansas’s age verification law. Kobach finished by saying if a company misrepresents or exaggerates the safety of their AI product or provides harmful materials to minors, they will have to answer for it in Kansas
