You may have noticed a sign at 15th and Ash yesterday, December 17th, that had two very direct messages, one on each side. One message containing a derogatory word, but in essence, the sign warns drivers to slow down and watch out for kids.

After a 12-year-old was struck by a vehicle at the intersection in October, Alex and David Cain have been trying to communicate with the city about their desire to make one of the busiest intersection in town more safe for pedestrians. In a social media post yesterday, they say the sign is a result of multiple emails to the Ottawa City Manager’s office, all which have been ignored. They have asked for updates regarding pedestrian safety. They have noticed city workers taking measurements and appreciate the installation of a wheel speed radar sign on 15th street in the westbound lanes leading toward the intersection.

In a brief statement at yesterday’s city commission meeting, Interim City Manager Blaine Finch mentioned it wasn’t easy making changes to intersections as there has to be state approval, engineer design suggestions and other things done to make the change. He did not specifically mention 15th and Ash.
