WILLIAMSBURG — The Kansas Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the cause of Sunday’s deadly crash on I-35 that killed five and injured 13 Minnesotans returning from a moto-cross race. Special accident investigation teams continue to work on the cause of the accident, State Trooper Don Hughes said. One team is mapping the accident scene; a special motor carrier safety team is looking at other aspects while the highway patrol’s aircraft unit took aerial photos of the scene to be used in the investigation, he said. Investigators have also been in contact with law agencies in Minnesota. A Freightliner box truck pulling a trailer with motorcycles and ATVs and driven by a 17-year-old went over a bridge railing and plunged into a creek in Osage County just southwest of Williamsburg. Eight people, mostly children and teenagers, still remain in Kansas City-area hospitals, Hughes said. Two are in critical condition. Six are in stable condition. Five have been treated and released.
