TOPEKA — You can say yes to your favorite candidate, but the Kansas Department of Transportation says no to place your candidate’s political sign on highway right of way.
KDOT said by law, all 9,500 miles of Kansas highway right-of-way can only be used for public highway purposes — and only highway signs for traffic, directions and warning purposes are allowed. If KDOT maintenance crews find political or business advertising on highway right of way, they’ll remove them. All such signs will be taken to the closest KDOT sub-area office where they can be picked up by the owner with the promise they will not be placed on state right of way again. All political campaign signs not picked up will be disposed of after the election. Political campaign advertising is allowed on private property bordering state right of way. KDOT suggests you should get permission from the property owner first.
