OTTAWA — Police searched Skunk Run and backyards in central Ottawa this morning and early this afternoon after a handcuffed man escaped from a moving police car late this morning. Capt. Adam Weingartner said the chase resulted when officers responded to a domestic disturbance, talked to a woman and then decided to arrest Daryl Chandley, 22. Chandley took off running on foot but officers caught up with him, Weingartner said. His second escape attempt in the 500 block of South Oak was more successful. Chandley was cuffed behind his back and was in a seat belt in the rear seat of a patrol car with a cage, he said. The officer heard a loud bang and looked in the mirror and saw the rear door open, he said. It wasn’t known how Chandley managed to escape, Weingartner said. Officers combed an area in the 300 to 400 blocks of South Mulberry and Sycamore streets and along Skunk Run. When he escaped, Chandley was wearing black shorts and a torn white T-shirt, Weingartner said. Officers found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia at the escape site, he said.
