WASHINGTON- The Kansas Department of Corrections is under fire after a recent report by the Justice Department shows that the Topeka Correctional Facility “fails to protect women prisoners from harm due to sexual abuse and misconduct from correctional staff and other prisoners in violation of their constitutional rights.” The report says that the KDOC and TCF have failed to protect its prisoners despite findings of the same misconduct in a similar report issued in January of 2010. The Justice Department says it’d like to work with officials to resolve the problems, however, if they aren’t addressed within 50 days of notification a federal lawsuit will be filed to compel reform.
