OTTAWA — Franklin County EMS ambulances have health monitors to watch the people riding in them. Monday, county EMS director Nick Robbins told county commissioners that he wants to install health monitors to watch the ambulances themselves. The monitors would keep track of how and how fast the ambulances are driven, sudden accelerations and stops, as well as maintenance information such as oil and fluid levels, he said. Ambulances often spend long periods of sitting and idling, and Robbins said he’s particularly interested in keeping track how long they idle to keep better track on when to change the engine oil. The web-based system would cost about $2,000 for five ambulance monitors, plus $24 per ambulance per year after the first year. Commissioners are scheduled to vote on the request Wednesday morning.
