BALDWIN CITY — A Baker student will take his fondness for community and environment causes to Zambia where he’ll work for the Peace Corps. Baldwin City native Sam Beecher will go to Africa in February for his two-year tour working with Zambia’s agriculture and forestry program. Beecher said he’ll have a bicycle to visit small rural villages in a 12- to 18-mile radius. He’ll said he’ll talk about sustainable farming techniques, soil conservation and erosion control. As a result of an internship in New Zealand, where he worked with environmental and farmers market programs, Beecher helped start and operate the Baker Farm Hands program, which involved community farming efforts and helped plant apple trees on the Baker campus.
