WASHINGTON — The U.S. corn supplies took a severe hit because of the massive and severe drought. Despite tight supplies, U.S. Department of Agriculture chief economist Joe Glauber said that the U.S. should meet export forecasts because there was less corn used for ethanol production, which saw a sharp downtown, this year. However, corn supplies need to recover next year to ensure there will be enough corn stocks left for export and ethanol production, he said. The East Kansas Agri-Energy ethanol plant in Garnett shut down Oct. 1 because of tight corn supplies because of the drought in the region and because of the drop in the ethanol market.
