SYRACUSE, Kansas — Former pop star Frankie Valens has a new gig. Valens, who was on the charts for hits such as “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” “This Magic Moment” and “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” is now the pastor at the First Christian Church in Syracuse in western Kansas. Valens, 70, told the Garden City Telegram that he’s never preached from a pulpit before. But he said he’s been on the road for years performing gospel songs and testifying about his faith. Valens’ father pastored at the same church in the late 1970s.
