JOHNSON COUNTY- The Shawnee Indian Mission state historic site in Johnson County will present “Underground Railroad Quilts: Exploring the Myths” on Saturday, February 9.  In the late 1990’s, stories spread about secret Underground Railroad codes supposedly hidden within quilt blocks to guide slaves to freedom in the north.  Visitors will learn more about the quilts and how historians and historical evidence disproved the code theories.  Admission to the historic site is $5 for adults, $1 for students. Kansas Historical Foundation members and children five and younger admitted free.  The Shawnee Indian Mission is located at 3403 West 53rd Street in Fairway.
