OTTAWA – Time shouldn’t be the only thing changing this weekend. Your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide batteries should, too. According to the Ottawa Fire Department, 80 percent of fatal fire accidents occur due to faulty smoke alarms. The most common reasons for non-working smoke alarms are old or missing batteries. Captain Tim Matthias says now is the best time to attend to your alarms. “Every six months you need to change your alarm,” Matthias said. “You always want to have a fresh battery.” Free smoke alarms are available for Franklin County residents at the Ottawa Fire Department. You can call 785-229-3700 for more information.
