POMONA — The West Franklin USD 287 school board agreed Monday night to place a proposed $14.3 million bond issue before voters. Board members did some last minute tweaking, and then the board voted to proceed with a bond election. They decided to hold a mail-in ballot, with the election date as June 4. The vote proceeded despite angry outbursts from members of the public attending the meeting. The estimated cost of the proposal to a new central elementary school in Pomona and make other building improvements would be about $16 million. The board voted to take $1.7 million from district reserves to reduce the size of the bond issue proposal. If voters approve the proposal, all elementary students will be brought to Pomona, and the Williamsburg and Appanoose elementary schools will be closed. The new central school would open in fall 2015.
