WALSH, Colo. — A will-o-wisp who has bedeviled Kansas law enforcement authorities has gone further afield into Colorado. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said it has received information that Robert Helms targeted a grocery store in Walsh, Colo., late Wednesday afternoon. Helms has portrayed himself as a law officer to pass bad checks, the KBI said. In one instance, Helms identified himself as the KBI agent in charge of catching him. Although the KBI said Helms has been most active in central and western Kansas, he has hit businesses in Anderson and Miami counties. The KBI said that in the case of the Colorado store, Helms produced a badge identifying himself as a deputy from Adams County, Kan. There is no Adams County in Kansas. The KBI said, based on his previous patterns, Helms may possibly try to pass some more bad checks in the southwest Kansas and southeast Colorado area over the next few days.
