MINE CREEK — The Mine Creek Battlefield State Historic Site will open its visitor center April 3.  Visitor center hours are 10 to 5 Wednesday through Saturday, until Oct. 26.  Visitors are welcome to tour the battlefield and walk the nature trail from dawn to dusk year-round.  Admission to the visitor center exhibits is $5 for adults, $1 students. Mine Creek Battlefield, near Pleasanton, was one of the largest cavalry battles in the Civil War and one of the few major battles fought in Kansas.  On Oct. 25, 1864, approximately 2,500 Union troops attacked and nearly destroyed an army of about 7,000 Confederates commanded by Maj. Gen. Sterling Price.  The battle was the end of Price’s abortive invasion of Missouri.
