Garnett – Anderson County voters are going to have many big decisions on April 2nd, but one of the bigger issues is whether or not to build a new hospital. The Anderson County Review reports the April 2nd ballot will present a proposition for a new hospital, costing more than 25 million dollars.
Those in support of the ordinance say the new building is needed because the current hospital, built in 1949, is out of date and no longer meets hospital building codes. Those against the ordinance say the county can’t afford the new facility and think more information needs to be presented before making a decision to pay for a new building.
The reason for this concern from the opposition is, should the ordinance pass, county residents will owe nearly 70 million dollars to pay for the new hospital, a new jail and a new elementary school in Garnett, while Garnett residents will pay an just over 79 million dollars for the same projects.
One of the aspects to try and cut costs is St. Luke’s Health System will pick up part of the costs for the new building, should the bill pass.
