TOPEKA — In an effort to prevent further spread of emerald ash borer in Kansas, the Kansas Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Agriculture will set 441 traps to detect whether the deadly tree pest has spread in Kansas. Kansas is participating in the USDA survey to monitor known emerald ash borer infestations and detect unknown beetle populations in Kansas. Since emerald ash borer was detected in Wyandotte County last August, experts haven’t found any additional infestations in the state, Laurinda Ramonda, agriculture pest survey coordinator, said. The Kansas Department of Agriculture permanently banned shipments into and out of Wyandotte county of certain firewood, nursery plants and mulch. Since it got into the U.S. from a ship at landing at Detroit, the emerald ash borer has killed millions of ash trees in the northern U.S.
