OTTAWA — A 22-year-old man was cited by Ottawa police for unlawful discharge of a firearm Saturday evening. Ottawa police said Dylan Spencer accidentally fired an AR-15 rifle in his apartment in the 1600 block of South Cedar Street. Spencer was handling the gun and thinking it was unloaded, pulled the trigger and the rifle went off, sending the bullet through the walls of his apartment, Ottawa Police Capt. Adam Weingartner said. No one was hurt, Weingartner said. However, it’s the third such incident occurring since December, and he said it illustrates the need for people to be careful in handling firearms and that they should always be regarded as loaded unless the owners have checked them.
