BALDWIN CITY — Weather permitting, three miles of U.S. 56 west of Baldwin City will be closed beginning today. The Kansas Department of Transportation project will replace three bridges between East 1400 Road and 6th Street in Baldwin City. That part of U.S. 56 will be closed all summer. KDOT said it hopes to have the highway reopened in October before the Maple Leaf Festival. The main detour is via K-33 through Wellsville. An intersection improvement project in Baldwin City will also take place in conjunction with the bridge replacements. That project includes grading work between East 1600 Road and Bullpup Drive to improve sight distance and to add a west-bound left turn lane to Lawrence Street in Baldwin City.
