BALDWIN – A change could be coming for Baldwin high school students and what technology they use in the classroom. Monday, the Baldwin school board discussed the possibility of adding a new student fee that would be introduced with the distribution of ipads next school year. The fee would be for insurance of the ipads in the event they are damaged. District technology director Steve Hemphill says it is the opinion of some other school districts that students are more careful with the care of their ipads when there is a fee for damaging one. Hemphill did say that the board is trying to find a way to accommodate families who may not be able to afford an extra fee. One option may be that the fee would only be enforced on ipads that left the building after school, but also said that would prevent those students from using ipads for homework. Nothing was voted on, and the discussion is ongoing.
