KANSAS — The Kansas Historical Society says more early-day Kansas newspapers are now on-line at a special Library of Congress’ newspaper website, chroniclingamerica.loc.gov. The newspapers were digitized with funding received from the National Endowment for the Humanities in partnership with the National Digital Newspaper Program. Among those papers digitized – territorial editions of the Freeman’s Champion of Prairie City, which was near modern-day Baldwin City; The Kansas Chief of White Cloud, The Kansas Herald of Freedom from Lawrence and the Kansas Weekly Herald of Leavenworth. The Historical Society says this series of newspapers was chosen because of their coverage of the Kansas territorial era, the Civil War, and the populist movement. The Historical Society will digitize another 100,000 pages of Kansas newspapers by September.
