TOPEKA — The special exhibit ‘Formerly Known as Treece’ is on display in the the Kansas Historical Society’s State Archives Gallery in Topeka. The southeast Kansas mining town of Treece was once a thriving community and a leading producer of lead and zinc in the country. However, after the minerals played out, Treece was an environmental disaster area. After the Environmental Protection Agency designated the town a “superfund” site, almost all of its residents took advantage of a government buy-out and moved away. The Kansas Museum of History has been documenting the history of Treece which resulted in this special exhibit. The exhibit runs through June 30. Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for students. Kansas Historical Foundation members and children five and younger are free.
