TOPEKA – In an attempt to save money dedicated to high-poverty schools, other districts are having their education-funding cut. Statewide, Kansas schools are facing a cut in their federal funding by 7.2 percent. This comes out to 7.2 million dollars that will be cut from the state school’s title one funds. The cuts will be in effect for the coming school year. The Kansas State Department of Education notified the districts this week, calling the cuts “devastating.” About 5 percent of the cuts are due to the sequestration. The state education department is also losing funds, 1.4 million of which would have been used to assist schools that struggle academically.
