TOPEKA – Recent proposed budget cuts have some worried about the safety of Kansans. According to the Lawrence Journal World, Kansas Secretary of Corrections Ray Roberts believes the potential cuts being discussed could cause the closing of a prison in northwest Kansas and leave several low and medium-risk offenders who are on parole without the necessary supervision to keep Kansans safe. Roberts also says the cuts could cause cuts in programs for mental illness and substance abuse. The bill has yet to be discussed in depth by either the Senate or the House, and no decision is expected soon.
