JAPAN — Japan and South Korea has halted some imports of American wheat and the European Union has urged its 27 member counties to test American wheat in the wake of the discovery of some of Monsanto’s genetically-modified wheat on a farm in Oregon.  The discovery is a mystery because Monsanto stopped its work on genetically-modified wheat several years because of the resistance of overseas buyers.  The mystery has started a scramble among regulators to find an answer and to contain the fallout.  But the US Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service’s Michael Firko says he can’t make any promises how long the investigation will take.  Investigators started basically from square one and have had little to go on, he said.  The USDA is also being criticized because it took 26 days for the regulators to announce the  discovery.
