OTTAWA — The Ottawa City Band kicks off its summer concert series tonight at 7:30 at City Park, weather permitting. Tonight’s concert theme is “New Frontiers,” said Mark Paquette, the Ottawa band director for the second straight year. Selections include “The Thunderer” by John Philip Sousa; “To Forge a New Frontier,” by Ralph Ford, and “Deep River Suite,” by Frank Erickson. “New Frontiers” is centered about the discovery of America and what pioneers would have encountered in coming to America, Paquette said. “I tried to find music that at least had something to do with that theme,” he said. Paquette has also been trying to build the size of the band and he said it’s possible that about 50 musicians could show up tonight, he said. Also for the second straight year, food vendors will be at city park in conjunction with the concert. The concert is subject to the weather. Paquette said that in event of bad weather, he’ll decide to cancel by 6. Concerts are scheduled for each Tuesday evening in June and the first part of July, as well as a special concert June 15 at the Williamsburg Jayhawker Days, and Independence Day.
