TOPEKA — The state’s 4-A high school category will be split into two divisions. The 4-A schools voted overwhelmingly 42-22 to make the split. The Kansas State High School Activities Association announced the results Tuesday and said that the 64-school classification will be split into two 32-team divisions in football, volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball. The split is effective immediately in all sports except football, which is in the middle of its two-year cycle. There will be separate post-season tournaments for each division. KSHSAA said it is scrambling host cities for the state tournaments for the new division Last year, except for the 1-A category, which is already split into two divisions, 4-A had the largest differences in enrollment, and competitive athletic disadvantages had become more of a concern in recent years. The enrollment of Highland Park of Topeka, the largest 4-A school, was nearly three times larger than the smallest schools, Frontenac and Rock Creek. The Frontier League was the only league to oppose the proposal. Most of the league’s teams, Ottawa, Paola, Louisburg and Baldwin will be in the large school 4-A division.
