TOPEKA — Roadway rehabilitation projects on U.S. 169 in Miami and Franklin counties began today. The Kansas Department of Transportation said the connecting projects will start at the Anderson-Franklin county line and continue northeast for approximately eight miles, ending a little more than a mile southwest of the K-7 junction at Osawatomie. Based on a 44-foot roadway, the projects will widen the highway to two 12-foot driving lanes with 10-foot asphalt and turf shoulders. Traffic should not be significantly impacted during the first phase, which will include extending drainage structures, widening shoulders and shaping ditches along the route, KDOT said. Next year, the contractor will mill off the top pavement and overlay the highway with new asphalt, and finish paving the shoulders. During the resurfacing phase, traffic will be reduced to one lane at the work zone with flaggers and a pilot car, KDOT said. KDOT will release additional information concerning the second phase later. KDOT awarded a contract of approximately $11 million to APAC-Kansas for the work.
