TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is out with its infant mortality findings and the rate is up slightly. In 2012, there were 254 infant deaths, which is up from 247 in 2011. That results in a mortality rate of 6.3 per one-thousand live births. The Kansas Department of Health reports that the leading causes of infant deaths in the state are premature or low-birth weight, birth defects, sudden infant death syndrome, and maternal complications of pregnancy.
