LAWRENCE — A book about the Border War between Kansas and Missouri edited by a University of Kansas history professor was published Tuesday by the University Press of Kansas to mark the 150th anniversary of William Quantrill’s bloody raid on Lawrence. KU Professor Jonathan Earle, is co-editor of “Bleeding Kansas, Bleeding Missouri: The Long Civil War on the Border.” Earle and co-editor Diane Mutti-Burke, a professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, recruited 15 young scholars to explore the bloodshed as part of Bleeding Kansas, and its lasting effects on the two states, as well as the nation as a whole. Earle says attacks by groups along both sides of the state line led to a violent and escalating cycle of robbery, arson and revenge, leading to the worst guerrilla warfare in American history. Earle has been a frequent contributor to KOFO Community Perspective programs on slavery, bleeding Kansas and John Brown.
