GARNETT — Garnett Elementary School will kick off a new program called Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) with a pizza night Tuesday evening at 5:30 at the school’s gymnasium. One father’s desire to increase men’s involvement in his children’s school at Springdale, Ark., prompted the creation of Watch D.O.G.S. 15 years ago. Since then, the program has spread to other schools across the country. Thousands of men volunteer to work at least one day in their child’s school through the program. These men work as crossing guards, helping school bus riders, library assistants, and as classroom and lunchroom helpers. Studies show having a positive adult male role model in schools has a good impact on the future success of young students, the U.S. Department of Education said. Osawatomie also has a Watch D.O.G.S. program.
