LAWRENCE — A new public wholesale water district wants to build a $6 million water plant along the Kansas River between Lawrence and Eudora. Osage County Rural Water District No. 5 and Douglas County Rural Water District No. 5 formed the new Wholesale District. The Lawrence Journal-World reports the two rural water districts have applied for a zoning permit to build the new water plant on a 28-acre site. Wholesale Water District Administrator Larry Wray tells the newspaper that a $10 million 30-mile pipeline would also be built between eastern Douglas County and western Osage County. He says if Douglas County okays the proposal, construction won’t start until late next year, with the plant and pipeline in operation in 2016. Wray says the new plant would be able to treat about 1 million gallons per day, but its capacity could be more than doubled easily to accommodate more water districts and customers.
