KANSAS — The drought status of east-central Kansas counties have improved.  Governor Sam Brownback formally updated the drought declaration for Kansas counties.  The status of Franklin, Miami, Osage, Douglas and Johnson counties were improved from a drought emergency to a drought warning.  Anderson, Linn and Coffey counties were upgraded to a drought watch.  Despite the improvement, many existing area water restrictions will remain in place.  The Kansas Water Office says most area reservoirs, which provide most of the drinking water for east-central Kansas, still remain slightly below normal levels.  Brownback’s declaration still keeps 37 counties in central and western Kansas in a state of emergency.  Counties still in the emergency stage remain eligible for emergency use of water from certain state fishing lakes and emergency CRP haying and grazing.
