SOUTH AFRICA — Nelson Mandela will receive the 2013 Dole Leadership Prize. The Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics announced the award to the former President of South Africa and anti-apartheid activities yesterday. Although he was a revolutionary, after he was released from prison, he became President and helped establish South Africa as a multi-racial democracy. Previous recipients include former President George H. W. Bush, former US Senators Howard Baker and George McGovern and former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Mandela’s great-grandson Luvuyo Mandela will accept the award October 27. The award comes with a $25,000 prize that will go to the Nelson Mandela Center of Memory at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in South Africa. The 95-year-old Mandela is in intensive care at his home for tuberculosis he contracted during his 27 years as a political prisoner and is considered in critical condition .
