LAWRENCE — Douglas County commissioners were to consider a request this afternoon from Baldwin City for a proposed $5 million industrial revenue bond issue to bring fiber-optic internet connections to Baldwin City. The Lawrence Journal-World reports the city formally voted to issue the bonds for the Internet company, Free State Broadband, to build a fiber network that would offer faster broadband service. The county commission must also approve the bond issue because part of the network would be outside the city limits. Baldwin City administrator Chris Lowe told the Journal-World that the project is still tentative because the company is still negotiating with a lender who would buy the bonds.
