OTTAWA — Franklin County commissioners, sitting as the public building commission, approved a $1.6 million contract Monday with McElroy’s of Topeka to build a futuristic, geothermal heating and cooling system at the courthouse. County administrator Lisa Johnson said she and the county’s architectural consultant have reviewed the contract and McElroy’s has signed the contract. McElroy’s will drill a fan-shaped arrangement of more than 30 geothermal wells in the courthouse lawn. Most of the work will be done next year.
