GARNETT — Although an official cause of a fire that destroyed a two-story house just east of Garnett recently hasn’t been released, Anderson County emergency management director J.D. Mersman told the Anderson County Review that it appears the fire was accidental and caused by a problem with the chimney. The house’s owner, Barb Watkins, said her husband was cooking dinner when he heard a popping noise from the dining room and investigated and found the wall next to the fireplace was on fire. Although insurance will cover the cost of the house and contents, Watkins said she had many antiques and local historical items that were irreplaceable. She ran a cleaning business from the house but that won’t be affected by the fire. She also praised the generosity of the community which she says has been overwhelming.
